COMMUNITY

CURRENT PROGRAMS

Climate Ready Missoula strategies are wide-ranging and impact planning, development, programs, and policies.

Our implementation teams and work groups have worked together to prioritize strategies since the plan's adoption in 2020 and developed the programs below which provide resources and education to community members and stakeholders alike. These programs represent some of our progress to date and we will continue to implement the many strategies in this plan for years to come.

Some programs that prioritize clean energy may seem like mitigation strategies because they reduce carbon pollution, but they also help us address the effects of climate change by diversifying our energy supply to protect our power in the face of extreme weather or against volatile market prices in addition to making energy more affordable for more people. This is called an intersectionality and intersectional strategies are a high priority.

Some programs or resources are managed by CRM leaders while others have been developed by partner agencies and organizations. Access resources and specific program information below.

STAY COOL MISSOULA

This campaign was developed as part of an extreme heat toolkit that includes strategies and resources to help stakeholders prepare for and respond to extreme heat in community health, ecosystem health, infrastructure, and emergency response.

The team also developed a StoryMap that tells the story of extreme heat in our communities, looks at heat trends over time, and provides ways to beat the heat, and support ecoystsems and infrastructure.

SCM was developed by representatives from County Climate Action, Climate Smart Missoula, and City Climate and Sustainability.

CLEAN AIR CENTERS

In 2025, with support from the Montana Department of Health & Human Services (DPHHS) and the EPA, we have set up Clean Air Centers in Missoula and Ravalli Counties.

Each offers respite and a place to find resources to understand the risks from smoke and how to improve the indoor air quality of your home or business.

These sites also have Purple Air Sensors that measure the current indoor air quality.

CAC was developed by representatives from Climate Smart Missoula and Missoula Public Health.

WILDFIRE PROTECTION

Through Missoula County's Office of Emergency Management, homeowners can access (1) a free wildfire risk assessment, (2) a cost-share program to reduce flammable materials and wildfire fuels around your home, and (3) information on the Community Wildfire Protection Plan.

The Plan is a tool for identifying local priorities for wildfire risk reduction and resilience. It includes a risk assessment for Missoula County, an in-depth discussion of fire-adapted communities, and strategies for local agencies and organizations.

The Wildfire Protection Program resources were developed by the Office of Emergency Management, Missoula County Office of Lands & Communities, United Way, and MT Department of Natural Resources and Conservation.

WILDFIRE SMOKE

Wildfire Smoke Ready provides programming and outreach to help Missoulians stay healthy during wildfire smoke season.

This work includes an annual outreach campaign known as Wildfire Smoke Ready Week and regular seasonal education on existing resources for clean indoor air.

Wildfire Smoke Ready resources and information were developed by Climate Smart Missoula and Missoula Public Health in conjunction with CRM's Wildfire Smoke, Heat, and Health working group.
